First mentioned everywhere else but here, you might appreciate Rachel Barrett’s NYC Newsstand project, which was given the slideshow treatment by The Times this week.

Inspiration rarely lands fully formed in my lap ready to party. Sometimes inspiration comes in fevered flashes of random images as I sleep; most of the time it comes in a slow march of real world dots and dabs that eventually add up to something grand. For Domesticated some of those dots came from the now defunct band Sleater-Kinney.

Sleater-Kinney's exploration of the tense space between the natural and human world seemed to begin at about the same time I was exploring the initial ideas behind my project. Starting with the song "Light Rail Coyote" (inspired by the newspaper article above) and ending with the cover art for their final album The Woods and the video for "Entertain," Sleater-Kinney's choice of imagery and words helped inform the direction of my work in ways I didn't fully realize at the time.

latina

as requested another shot of the most popular latina model i have shot.

i have decided to try to overcome my fat geordie beer belly bloke roots and start salsa classes. a rhino with 4 left feet would be more elegant but i will try my best. i still don't think men from northern england have the best shaped hips for it. they don't move right in fact they don't move at all unlike these hot latina ladies. i have to watch our private teacher's feet only or i start to feel faint.

"Just two days ago, Gordon Brown was urging us all to stop wasting food and combat rising prices and a global shortage of provisions. But yesterday the Prime Minister and other world leaders sat down to an 18-course gastronomic extravaganza at a G8 summit in Japan, which is focusing on the food crisis. The dinner, and a six-course lunch, at the summit of leading industrialised nations on the island of Hokkaido, included delicacies such as caviar, milkfed lamb, sea urchin and tuna, with champagne and wines flown in from Europe and the U.S." (story)

I saw Curtis Mann's series Modifications at the exhibition The Ubiquitous Image, Leslie Martin's curatorial effort at this year's New York Photo Festival. His "modified" photographs are found, or appropriated from friends, Flickr or Ebay, and then selectively painted with varnish and bleached to erase specific parts of the composition. In his statement for the work, Mann asserts:

"The photograph is physically and contextually altered to produce a reading that oscillates between image and object, photography and painting, real and imagined. This new interpretation attempts to disrupt how we normally perceive, understand and connect with the fragmented world in which these photographs attempt to represent."

AlecSoth_Detroit.jpg "With a $3 trillion war bill and an economy that flounders as China's soars, could America's era of dominance on the world stage be coming to an end? Mick Brown and the photographer Alec Soth travelled across America and China to observe how the future of these two great nations is intertwined, and to find out whether, in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics and the US election, we are on the brink of a new world order. In the first of a four-part series, they meet army recruitment officers in Virginia and cadets at West Point." Part 2: "Once symbolic of optimism and certainty, America's credit-crunched suburbs may be facing a decline as dramatic as that of Detroit, itself once a beacon of industry." (found via Colin Pantall's blog)

One of my favorite assignments this year was shooting details of the San Jose Hotel in Austin for their website and hotel postcards . The site is finally up and it's pretty rad! They made my photos into 8mm film footage. There's a prize for whoever finds Bucks on the site. Check it out the cool new site designed by the talented boys at Coloring Book Studio here.
